A trailblazer in racial and health equity, Powell will lead TIME’S UP’s work to end harassment and discrimination in health care

WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 16, 2019) – TIME’S UP™ Foundation announced today that Dr. Lauren Powell will assume the role of executive director of TIME’S UP Healthcare, effective January 15, 2019. As the youngest black woman to serve as a state health official in Virginia and a lifelong champion for racial and social equity in health care, Powell was the clear choice to lead this industry change initiative.

“It is such a privilege to have Lauren leading our fight to end gender discrimination and sexual harassment in health care,” said Dr. Esther Choo, founding member and strategic lead for TIME’S UP Healthcare. “She is completely oriented around our goals to make health care safer and more accessible for all women, and ultimately, to provide better care to our patients. Her arrival gives us a huge, exciting boost moving forward.”

Sexual harassment runs rampant in health care: Researchers estimate that 50 percent of female medical students will experience harassment before they even graduate. Case in point: out of more than 5,500 cases sent to the TIME’S UP Legal Defense Fund, health care has one of the highest numbers of claims. There is also a lack of representation at the top: Women comprise nearly 80 percent of the healthcare workforce, yet hold less than 20 percent of leadership positions.

Since launching in March 2019, TIME’S UP Healthcare has worked directly with prominent institutions in medicine and the sciences to address these issues. In May 2019, Dr. Choo provided testimony at a listening session for survivors of sexual harassment and other forms of discrimination at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). TIME’S UP Healthcare leaders also collaborated with Yale School of Medicine (YSM) in a day-long “Respect Retreat” about fostering an equitable and inclusive culture at YSM. For its innovative work to transform the culture of health care-related fields, in July TIME’S UP Healthcare received the American Medical Women’s Association Presidential Award at the Medical Women’s International Association’s Centennial Congress.

“We’re in a once-in-a-generation moment to achieve real, lasting change,” said Tina Tchen, president and CEO of TIME’S UP. “Lauren’s health equity lens and tenacious spirit represents exactly the kind of leadership needed to create a safe and equitable industry for all.”

Powell joins TIME’S UP from the Virginia Department of Health’s Office of Health Equity (OHE), where she pioneered innovative programs and initiatives to increase equity, diversity, and inclusion in health across the Commonwealth of Virginia. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Xavier University of Louisiana, a Masters in Public Administration at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Clinical and Population Health Research at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

From hosting Virginia’s first-ever health equity conference to leading hard conversations on intersectionality and inequity, Powell is prepared to build on TIME’S UP Healthcare’s progress. To date, more than 50 organizations have joined TIME’S UP Healthcare as signatories, pledging their commitment to addressing sexual harassment and gender inequity in health care.

“There is much work yet to be done to ensure equity in the health care sector and implement changes that can help people live their fullest, healthiest lives,” said Dr. Powell. “It’s an exciting and timely moment to make sure the industry focuses on dismantling and eradicating systems of power and privilege to create equity-rooted, inclusive workplaces for all women working in health care. A safe working environment free from harassment should be the standard, not the exception. The time is now to lead this charge, and I couldn’t be more excited to do so.”
