TIME’S UP: “We Are Never Going Back to the Days When Harassment Remained in the Shadows”

Today, news outlets reported that Brian Gallagher has stepped down as CEO of United Way Worldwide following allegations of pervasive sexism and retaliation at the organization.

Tina Tchen, president and CEO of TIME’S UP Foundation, provided the following statement:

“We commend the women whose bravery in coming forward about United Way Worldwide’s culture of fear and retaliation ultimately brought forth this much needed change. It is our sincere hope that this change in leadership is accompanied by a profound change in the way that the organization treats its employees.”

“While our fight for safe, fair, and equitable workplaces does not stop here, one thing is clear: we are never going back to the days when sexual harassment and retaliation remained in the shadows.”

Three years after #metoo went viral in October 2017, the National Women’s Law Center released a report, analyzing the 3,317 requests for legal help submitted to the TIME’S UP Legal Defense Fund between January 1, 2018 and April 30, 2020. The report, Coming Forward, reveals the dynamics and trends of workplace sex harassment that have long remained hidden:

  • More than seven in 10 people who experienced workplace sex harassment faced some form of retaliation.
  • More than one in seven people (15%) were threatened with legal action, with losing their job, or even physical harm, if they told anyone about their harassment.
  • Of people who reported harassment, nearly three in 10 (29%) said nothing was done about it.
  • More than one in five described how sex harassment had a devastating impact on their economic well-being. Nearly one in five said that the harassment had long-term negative repercussions for their mental health.
